Why Certifed Organics?
The benefits of certified organic products and processes are:
Independent third-party guarantee of quality, and purity of ingredients.
- Safe, clean and potent plant extracts of high vitality.
- Sustainable agriculture that respects supports and nurtures the complete ecology and energy of our planet.
- Authenticity and integrity of organic and natural claims.
-Prevention of damage to the environment and humans by the poisonous chemicals used in conventional agriculture.
To obtain organic certification for a product, a minimum of 95% of all ingredients of agricultural origin must be certified organic. The remaining 5% of ingredients however are also bound by strict guidelines. They are, for example, not permitted to be synthetic chemicals or artificially processed ingredients.
With 'natural' and 'organic' claims abound, the only way you can be sure is by using a fully certified organic range of products.
How to become and ingredient detective
Have you ever bought a product that you were assured was natural, only to find that you couldn't pronounce the label? Would you like to learn about "semi-natural" and derived from "ingredients than the brochure tells you?
There is a source of information that comes form the ingredient manufacturer that is called a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
MSDSs are a summary of important information on chemical substances regarding product information, hazard identification, first aid measures, exposure limits and precautions when using the ingredient.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCDS) requires an MSDS be prepared for chemicals that are hazardous according to the criteria described in the HCS.
A good website to start researching the chemicals used in skin care and other products is: www.hazard.com/msds
This takes you to SIRI (Safety Information Resources Inc.) MSDS website.
ARE YOUR LABELS TELLING YOU THE TRUTH?
It is recognised that skin absorbs many ingredients in skin care preparations. This is both good and bad. Good, because it means our skin can be nourished from the outside with some wonderful ingredients. Bad, because some skin care manufacturers can use harmful ingredients that would never be allowed to be taken orally, but are still absorbed into our system through our skin.
If we look at the term "natural" we would probably define it as "existing in, or formed by nature; not artificial". Many labels have long lists of chemical names, some followed by the phrase "derived from…" (Some natural substance). This is misleading for consumers.
When chemicals such as Cocamide DEA or Sodium Hydroxysultaine are followed by the words "derived from coconut oil"
The consumer is led to believe that synthetic chemicals must be natural. While this may be
true in some cases, it is ultimately irrelevant because what you wind up with after the chemical processing is usually anything but natural and pure.
To create cocmide DEA a foaming agent found in most shampoos requires the addition of a synthetic chemical and known carcinogen, Diethanolamin-DEA, to the coconut oil. It is therefore no longer natural or safe!
An increasing amount of companies are now claiming to use "organic" herbs in there products But, what about the rest of the ingredients are they safe? The simple answer is NO.
However the term "certified organic" is governed by a number of internationally recognised bodies. Searching for products with the logo of a certifying body on the label is the only way you can guarantee the organic authenticy and integrity of every ingredient in the product. Without this the organic claim means nothing as it cannot be verified meaning you may be using chemicals
